  • Toyota is currently developing a solid state battery, which utilizes sulfide superionic conductors that can charge or discharge completely in under 10 minutes. This concept will make it ideal for electric vehicles.
  • Zinc-ion batteries are gaining traction and popularity as many experts claim them to be the direct alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However, the difference is that zinc-ion batteries will use water as the electrolyte. On the other hand, lithium-ion uses a flammable electrolyte. The level of safety, environmental friendliness, and lower cost of lithium batteries is why this projected battery has been trending in recent years.


What’s the Point of Changing Out Batteries?

There are more reasons to replace an EV battery than the obvious one, which is when it dies. Here are other reasons for EV battery replacement: 

Warranty Coverage

Most EV manufacturers have an eight-year, 100,000 miles, or ten years, 150 miles warranty on their designated battery. That means the warranty will likely cover your battery if you do have to replace your battery. 

So even though an electric battery lasts 10 to 20 years before needing replacement, switching out the battery during its eighth or tenth year could be more beneficial as the manufacturer’s warranty will cover the replacement.

Newer Battery Technology

 The technology and battery options have also changed and improved drastically over a period of ten years. Newer battery models are much lighter, have a longer range, charge faster, and are more environmentally friendly. If you own an older model EV, upgrading to a newer battery model could greatly improve your driving experience.

If your battery was damaged in an accident or sustained another type of damage, it will likely need to be replaced. While you can repair some battery damage, it’s often more expensive and difficult than simply replacing the entire battery.

Can You Upgrade an EV Battery?

So, can EV batteries be replaced or upgraded? The answer is yes, but it’s not going to be cheap. If you do have the budget and you intend to upgrade your EV battery to an even better one with more power, by all means, go ahead. However, keep in mind that it might or might not be doable.

For example, if you’d like to upgrade from a 7.2kWh (kilowatt-hours) charging limit to an 11kWh, it might not be possible as the charging port and battery management system (BMS) might not support it.
