3 Levels of EV Charging

For example, a Chevy Bolt EV can charge from empty to full in about nine hours on a Level II charger, while a Tesla Model S 75D with the same battery size can do it in about six hours.

DC Fast Charging (Level III)

The fastest way to charge an EV is with DC fast charging, which can juice up your car’s battery in a fraction of the time it takes with Level I or II charging. That’s because DC fast chargers send direct current (DC) directly to the battery, bypassing the onboard charger. This allows for much higher charging rates—up to 50kW or more.

As a result, you can charge an EV in as little as 30 minutes with DC fast charging. However, this convenience comes at a cost because DC fast chargers are much more expensive than Level I or II chargers. DC charging isn’t as widely available.
