What is a Transmission Assembly Plant

Automaker Institutes Precision Measurement System At New Transmission Assembly Plant

A major automaker wanted to improve the speed and accuracy of parts inspection at a new powertrain plant. A consistent system was needed to take and analyze measurements at more than 50 planned quality control workstations.

Problem

Engineers planning the assembly process needed accurate static and dynamic measurements, including improved repeatability and reproduceability (R&R) at the new transmission plant. A consistent means of taking measurements at off-line inspection stations was required. The new inspection system would need to integrate data collection and reporting.

Solution

An integrated DataMyte precision measurement system, using LVDT probes and other close-tolerance gauging, was installed at each inspection station. The standard DataMyte electronics are capable of being used with a variety of gauging, thus allowing for flexibility in future inspection configurations. Collected data resides in a centralized database and is analyzed on a regular basis to ensure consistent quality.

The DataMyte system, with fast SimulScan technology, resulted in the new plant having the highest productivity in the corporation shortly after startup. Simulscan technology scans each incoming channel 1000 times per second simultaneously, faster than any other electronic precision measurement system. The DataMyte system was an excellent fit for the many operations performed at the plant, including math, total indicator readout (TIR) and contour matching.

Other benefits included significant cost reduction from using a common measurement system, with DataMyte supplying the gauging electronics. The DataMyte equipment also allowed the plant to centralize and standardize operator training and reporting. The introduction of the precision measurement process for SPC, coupled with ongoing analysis of historical data, has made the new plant a model for future assembly operations.
